ABSTRACT

The second half of the twentieth century witnessed the emergence and rapid
development of statistical mechanics together with its rigorous mathematical
foundations. One of the most profound discoveries in this field was the realiza-
tion that the same set of specifications (conditional distributions) may define
several different measures, a phenomenon known as a phase transition. This
idea largely shaped the range of questions studied by Pechersky’s generation
and inspired many researchers of that time.
Pechersky was an active participant in the Seminar series in Mathematical
Physics (the Big Seminar, as it was known colloquially), organized by Roland
Dobrushin, Vadim Malyshev, Robert Minlos and Yakov Sinai, outstanding sci-
entists deeply involved in the development of statistical mechanics.
The presence in this volume of contributions by our Armenian colleagues also
reminds us of the traditional conference on statistical mechanics regularly held
in Armenia, which for many years has served as a meeting place for researchers
in this field. Pechersky considered the meetings in Armenia as very important;
he made every effort to take an active part in their work and greatly enjoyed
visiting Armenian cultural sites and areas of natural beauty.
This is the second volume of papers dedicated to Evgeny Pechersky. The
Guest Editors would like to thank all authors for their contributions to this
volume.
